Some silver linings to get you through.

Not everything is going to shit – we promise. To prove it, we’ve rounded up some good news stories to reinvigorated your hope in the world.

RHINOS RETURN Guess who’s back, back again? Ugandan rhinos are back – tell a friend. In fact, tell everyone! For context, it’s been over 40 years since the last rhino in Uganda was poached, leading to the complete extinction of the species in the country. But now, thanks to the Uganda Wildlife Authority and same darn persistent rhinoceroses, two southern white rhinos have returned to Kidepo Valley National Park. Great work, big guys.

HERE COMES THE SUN Look, we know that global climate news isn’t exactly positive, but what we do know is that ordinary Aussie folk want to do their bit to help. In a land of near-infinite sunshine, it only makes sense that Australian households are embracing renewable energy thanks to solar power. Well, turns out Australia has the highest uptake of household solar in the WORLD. One in every three Aussie homes are now boasting the means for sun-made energy – that’s for sure something to smile about.

EMMA WIGGLE You don’t need us to tell you how rad Emma Watkins (aka Emma Wiggle) is. But we shall! Among her long list of achievements – like being the first female Wiggle, raising awareness for endometriosis and winning multiple ARIA Awards – Emma has also been a massive advocate for Australia’s Deaf community. As if she couldn’t get any cooler, Emma recently partnered with the NSW government to create a commemorative birth certificate that uses Auslan fingerspelling to spell out the recipient’s name. Pretty darn rad, if you ask us.

OZONE OF INTEREST Remember when the supposed hole in the ozone layer was all anyone could talk about? Well, despite other not-so-awesome climate stuff going on at the moment, you’ll be chuffed to know that the ozone layer hole (although not really a hole, more of a region of exceptionally depleted ozone in the stratosphere) is looking up! We’re well on track to get that bad boy healed in our lifetimes – approximately by 2066, according to the United Nations. Huzzah!

A BIT OF PERSPECTIVE We’re over the moon to let you know that NASA’s tally of planets outside our solar system has recently surpassed 6000. And these are only the ones that have been officially recongised – there are thousands more wannabe planets where that came from. From rocky planets to gas giants, remembering that this little world of ours is just one of many might be just the perspective-reminding pick-me-up we need from time to time.
