a desert in bloom
Ol’ Mother Nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes.
Ol’ Mother Nature sure knows how to keep us on our toes. Just when we think we have the ways of the natural world all figured out, she springs us with a surprise that practically makes our hearts burst with joy.
This time round it’s a desert in Chile that’s inspiring a spontaneous happy dance. Just like adding water to Sea Monkeys to bring the creepy critters to life, a dose of rainfall to the Atacama Desert – the driest non-polar desert on Earth, no less – has caused an explosion of flowers through the usually barren soil, forming a thick pink carpet fit for picking, frolicking and rolling around.
Supposedly the blooms spend their days (months, years) hibernating underneath the dusty surface, just waiting for enough of a downpour that they can finally break free. All we know is we’re rather tempted to hotfoot it over to Chile, stat. In the meantime, we’ll be high-fiving Mother N and dreaming of days spent in a rosy pink haze.
