Are you a top-notch writer and editor – half nerd, half cool – who gets just as fired up about digital content as you do about long-form print journalism? We’re after a creative, detail-oriented journalist/editor to join the multi-award winning publisher, frankie press, on one of our flagship titles: Smith Journal. The role encompasses assisting our editor in producing the quarterly print edition (writing, researching, interviewing, editing, problem-shooting) and taking control of our website and social media (sourcing content, commissioning contributors, creating sharable Smith stuff).

We want someone who ‘gets’ Smith, is curious-minded about pretty much every subject under the sun and genuinely enjoys unearthing arcane information and sharing it with the world. Working closely with our editor and editor-in-chief – as well as design, marketing and ad teams – you’ll come up with story ideas, write articles, run online contributors and direct all digital content. You’ll know what makes a sentence sing, and where to bung a semicolon. You’ll understand writing for smart and savvy audiences, and have a good sense of design and photography (and humour) too.

- A university degree
- At least three years’ experience in an editorial role
- A demonstrated ability to come up with a shedload of ideas, and write smart stories in a variety of formats
- Excellent sub-editing and proofreading skills
- Experience with social media management and strategy
- Experience working with Photoshop, Google Analytics, content management systems and EDM distribution
- Knowledge of fact-checking, media law and basic copyright requirements
- Video and audio skills would be nice, too

This is a full-time position based in our South Melbourne office, literally metres away from some of the best coffee in town. We offer a collaborative and super-supportive team environment filled with excellent and hard-working people.

To apply, please:
1. Download and complete the application form here
2. Include a brief CV (preferably with written references)
3. Include three relevant samples of your published stories
4. Email the above as attachments to
Please put ‘Smith Journal Assistant Editor and Online Editor’ in the subject line.
