Yay, free music and good times are coming to Brissie this month! We couldn't be more excited about this year's Valley Fietsa and all the great things that come along with it. Musical niceties include Courage, Dan Parsons, Seja, Dead Shades, Parades, Polaroid Fame, The John Steel Singers and Yacht Club DJs to name a few. Also, we're super excited for the Ann Street Party, where one of the most iconic streets in The Valley has shops likeBlonde Venus and The Outpost turned into a canvas for art, film, exhibitions, fashion, performances and music. There's also a little Nine Lives Gallery collaboration and an after party at Club Fiesta.
This September, Brissie will come alive with some great new theatrical and contemporary performance works withUnder The Radar as part of the Brisbane Festival. The program will see site specific performances from over 100 experimental and emerging artists that spill into the streets of Brisbane. The work associated with Under The Radar promises to push the boundaries of art, laughter and thought for both the spectator and the artist.
We're all for experimental photography and this exhibition is no exception.The Over Exposed is a collection photos by Hobogestapo and opens on August 19 at the Loft in Sydney. Head over here for more details.
That's right folks, our fave design conference is heading to Melbourne for two jam-packed days of design, animation, photography, type and all-round aesthetic goodness. This round of speakers include Andy Jenkins, Pixar, Timba Smits and Akin Creative to name but a few. Kinokuniya is putting on a book presentation and signing of Bret Easton Ellis new novel, Imperial Bedrooms.Ellis is the man to thank for cult classics, The Rules of Attraction, American Psycho, The Informers, Glamorama, Lunar Park and his debut novel, Less Than Zero. Hosted by the Melbourne Social Forum, Listen & Learn From People Who Struggle For Indigenous Rights is an open discussion where the general public and experienced social campaigners alike can share experiences, thoughts and ideas in an non-confronational setting. This August as part of their First Look program, the ACMI are screeningTwo in the Wave, a doco about Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard as well as the 1966 film, Made in the USA, directed by Godard himself and starring the most lovely Anna Katrina. It's that time of year again, get your creative juices flowing and enter the Qantas Spirit Of Youth Awards (SOYA). SOYA is the leading grants program for emerging Australian creative talent in Visual Communication, Fashion Design, Visual Arts, Industrial Design, Film, Music and Photography. Last years winners included Oh Mercy,Tin and Ed,Romance Was Born and Nirrimi Hakanson. Now in its sixth year running, winners will receive $10,000 grants as well as flights and the opportunity to build a professional mentoring relationship with creative hot shots, who this year include, Marc Newson, Zimmermann, Deanne Cheuk, Jan Chapman and Liz Ann Macgregor.
