5 easy ways to jazz up your abode

Spruce up your space with these tips and tricks.

Injecting some ol’ razzle dazzle into your abode doesn’t have to involve a blueprint and a bulldozer. Sometimes it’s as simple as slapping a fresh coat of paint on the walls or approaching the space from a new perspective. So, please, pop that hammer away – spy these tips and tricks instead to spruce up your abode.

FROM THE GROUND UP If you’re looking to jazz up a particular space of your abode without tearing it apart and starting from scratch, it pays to look down. Mixing up the texture, tone and colour of whatever is going on with your floor space is a pretty darn easy way to zhuzh it all up. Machine-washable rugs are a good idea, too, if you’re prone to the odd spillage.

FRESH COAT OF GOODNESS Sometimes, it’s not the space itself that needs a makeover, it’s just the walls that house it. Depending on when you last painted your abode’s interior, your walls and doors and all the nooks and crannies in between will bear the scars of a life well lived. BJC Painting Services recommends re-painting the interior of your house every five to seven years – plus more for higher traffic areas of your abode. Perhaps this is just the excuse you need for a fresh coat… or a new whacky wall colour?

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE This tip is for all the thrifty folk out there. Save your dosh on any big investment abode-y pieces with a simple shift of perspective – both yours, and your home’s. If you ever used to delight in the simple joy of reconfiguring your bedroom layout as a kid, you’ll know what we mean. Sometimes a whole home’s vibe can change by shifting your couch to the other wall, or swapping the lounge room and the bedroom around.

LET THERE BE LIGHT Never underestimate the power of a ripper light. Overhead lighting may be scary at the worst of times, but with a simple change of the bulb to something warmer – paint it red or orange for bonus points – or a switch of the boring light fitting to an op shop-sourced chandelier – even more bonus points if you make it yourself – you’ve pretty much created a whole new space.

THE DESIGN IS IN THE DETAILS If you’re a trinket-lover, you’re no doubt already ahead of us with this trick. Perfect for folk that can’t splash the dosh on bigger abode items, investing small sums of cash into bits and bobs that you can sprinkle around your house is a super-easy way to zhuzh up the space. And don’t forget about the magic of secondhand goodies – the weirder and rarer, the better!
