tunesday – getting to know hotel

In our issue 115, we caught up with Andy Tudehope and talked all about his music project Hotel.

What’s your music-making process? It starts with lyrics, then melody, then I just put all the flavours in the blender and make a smoothie of a song.

How would you describe the Aussie music scene? I think it’s more eclectic than it has ever been. Each state really champions their own genres, leading to really strong rock, rap and jazz music coming through. I think the music we show to the world is up there with the best at the moment – especially because it still hasn’t been fully warped by TikTok trends and the need to stay relevant through banking on retro sounds rather than innovative ideas.

What’s it like working as a muso and in PR? It’s like watching the sausage get made. It does take away the magic a little bit, but it also provides me with insights into the inner workings of the industry and it’s nice to see how it works from both sides.

What gives you hope these days? This question really got me introspective – I guess it’s seeing those I love do what makes them happy, as well as the thought that every day can always be better than the last and be filled with something new and exciting.

What was the last trip you went on? I went camping at Wisemans Ferry for a few days for a friend’s birthday. The best thing about camping is going home and appreciating my bed and shower. I enjoyed it and it made me think of camping differently, slightly.

What themes often appear in your songs? Thinking positive, finding the silver lining and the different faces of love.

Best method to destress? Breathe, banoffee, buds, books, beach and bubble baths.
