tunesday – get to know redd.
Painting the town REDD.
Feast your ears on the rad REDD.! The Melbourne/Naarm superstar has dropped the brand-spanking-new track “better” just before heading off to the Northern Hemisphere for a crapload of shows. We chewed the fat with REDD. about the new song – taken straight out of their upcoming album heaven’s here, out November 20th.
Describe your music in a sentence. New-wave buzz
When did you first realise you wanted to be a musician? When I was younger, I actually wanted to be an actor – but I always knew I wanted to make music someday. I would say it became my main focus in 2020, and by 2021 I fully realised it.
Who have been some of your biggest local influences? Amyl and the Sniffers, The Kid Laroi, Gang of Youths, Bakers Eddy.
Tell us about your new track “life”. For a long time, I had put off talking about my personal life. I was scared of being perceived for my insecurities and letting people into my head. I had also just put off certain themes for fear of coming off as cringe or performative. I ended up biting the bullet with this project and specifically in “life”, where I share my own personal insecurities and life anecdotes. I talk about gender identity and coming of age, creating what I see as a mini biography of my life.
What was it like working with producer Dan Carey, both on your new single “better” and on your upcoming new project? Working with Dan was incredibly special. He’s become so much more than just a collaborator to me. He’s a very dear friend. Dan helped me through a really difficult time of my life. I was going through a period of grief at the time and Dan warmly welcomed me into his world and made me feel so safe. The studio was magic and the connection was immediate. It felt like we spent more time talking and laughing than actually writing!
Where is the weirdest place you’ve heard your music played? I don’t know, it’s all been pretty normal!
Which do you love more, playing live or writing music? This is an evil question, but if I had to choose it would be playing live. That feeling is like no other.
If there is one thing your listeners should know about you and your music, what is it? All I want is to connect! I just want to make and share music that I think is cool. :)
