It’s time to start thinking about picnic fare, frankie friends. An inevitable part of the weather warming up is a barrage of invites to outdoor dos, with a casual footnote squeezed in at the bottom: ‘bring yourselves… and a plate as well!’

There’s always the ol’ favourites, of course – fruit salad, fairy bread or a packet of snags – but if you feel like impressing your al fresco pals you could have a go at this fancy-pants cherry tomato, onion and gruyere tart. It’s not as tricky to whip up as it looks; have a squiz at the recipe on Tartine and Apron Strings if you’re not convinced.
