birds on the roof

There is so much good design thought going on behind this Rooftile Birdhouse from Klaas Kuiken that several parts of our brains have just shut down so we can process it all properly. First off, there's the problem: shrinking bird populations in cities. Which led Klaas to work with the Dutch Bird Association to work out what our feathered friends need (at least in the northern hemisphere). From this he's designed a rooftile that includes a little birdhouse up top – safe from the weather and curious cats – and a cozy nook for nesting underneath, which can be removed and cleaned once all the baby birds have grown up and flown away. We have to say the whole thing looks pretty classy, too. Nice work, Mr Kuiken.
