A chinwag with Kenyan-Australian hip hop extraordinaire.

Lend us your ears, dear frankfurts, because Brazen Barbie has entered the chat. We caught up with the rad muso to pick her brain about whether she prefers this... or that.

For people who haven’t heard you before, which of your mixtapes would you tell them to listen to first: BRAZEN or TOO BRAZEN? BRAZEN. She’s my firstborn so she has to get love first! It’s the perfect introduction, then TOO BRAZEN hits harder.

Would you rather collab with Missy Elliott or Cardi B? Can I cheat and say both? Missy shaped so much of what I love about hip-hop, and Cardi’s personality is infectious. I feel like either collaboration would bring out a completely different side of me.

Do you feel more connected to melodies or lyrics? Lyrics. I love when people catch a bar they didn’t notice the first time. That’s the kind of music I enjoy making.

Do you prefer writing music in the morning or at night? At night. That’s when my brain seems to come alive and the ideas flow the easiest.

Tea or coffee? Tea. I’ve never been a coffee girl. I don’t like the taste.

Pubs or clubs? Clubs. I don’t think I’ve actually been to a pub… and I don’t think I’m missing out.

Would you rather tour Australia or the world? Tour the world. I’d love to experience different crowds and different cultures while sharing my music.

Do you prefer big festivals or intimate shows? Big festivals. Hard to pick because I think intimate shows create the best memories but big festivals just feel electric.

Perth/Boorloo or Melbourne/Naarm? Melbourne. Perth raised me, but Melbourne challenged me. Both cities have played a huge part in who I am today.

Singing or rapping? Rapping. It’s where I can say exactly what I want, exactly how I want.

Ballet or track? Track. It taught me discipline, resilience and how to back myself. I still carry all of that into music today.

Barbie or Bratz? Barbie. Barbie is every woman – and she gave us Bibble. I’ve wanted a Bibble my whole life.
