“Closer” is the sweaty ’80s summer love song we need right now.

It’s bloody arctic outside, so it’s a good thing that Ngaiire just dropped a fiery new single on us. “Closer” comes from the soul singer’s forthcoming album (mark August 27th in your diaries) and centres on Ngaiire’s perspective of love, sex and dating as a young girl in post-colonial Papua New Guinea. Over a pulsating beat, Ngaiire’s heart-tugging vocals describe the heady feeling of secret fantasies, made all the more complicated by religious guilt and looming heartbreak. It's the “sweaty ’80s summer love song” we need right now, and it comes with some epic visuals to boot. On Instagram, Ngaiire thanked her video team and the entirely Pasifika and First Nations cast of dancers for bringing her vision to life. Tune in below.
