tunesday – hiatus kaiyote

There's a new album on the way.

It’s been six long years since we last heard from local neo-soul group Hiatus Kaiyote, but we finally have a taste of what’s to come. Earlier this month, the band teased us with “Get Sun”, the first single from their forthcoming record Mood Valiant, out on June 25th. In typical Kaiyote style, it’s lush as all get out, with cinematic strings and groovy rhythms, plus a feature from Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai.

The foundations of Mood Valiant were actually created on the road back in 2018, but work halted when vocalist Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield was diagnosed with breast cancer. She rushed back to Australia for life-saving surgery, an experience that gave her a new perspective on Mood Valiant’s songs. “When you think your life is going to be taken away from you, it makes you think about who you are,” Nai says. “I guess after the breast cancer scare I decided that I needed to prove to life that the offering I have is genuine. My only wish is to live and offer my experience of time and beauty.”

If all things go according to plan, the band will also be touring from this July. Keep an eye out on their website for more info.
