tunesday – get to know blush

By Juliette Salom
10 February 2026

Feast your ears on Blush’s “Embarrassed 4 U”.

We caught up for a chinwag with Skye Sam from rising rock group Blush to find out what she refuses to be embarrassed about.

Tell us about Blush and how the band come together. I’ve always had a huge admiration for girl bands – I found them so inspiring and really saw it as something I wanted to be part of. So a couple years ago, I put a story up on my Instagram just asking who wanted to start a girl band and, ironically, I had a male friend reply, who introduced me to Gianna (drummer). Austin (guitarist) I met through the music scene years before, and Holly (bassist) was introduced to me by our previous bassist. We had a couple of member swaps before we reached the lineup we have now, but this band has become like a family to me – we molded together so quickly it just works. We have such a unified clear vision of what we want for the band sonically as well as visually, and to all be on the same page for that is so important.

How would you describe your sound in one sentence? Girly grunge that drifts between delicate and fiery cathartic release.

How does being from Perth/Boorloo influence the music you make? I honestly don’t think being from Perth does have an influence on the music I make, but I think that being from such an isolated city means that we need to be a bit more conscious about how we market and release our music to try and reach a national demographic.

What’s the story behind your latest single, “Embarrassed 4 U”? I’ve experienced quite a large handful of people in my life telling me I’m “too much” or “overwhelming” or “exhausting”, and for a little while it really bothered me. It made me feel like every person I met thought the same thing and I felt like I had to shrink myself down to make other people feel more comfortable. But after a while, I came to the realisation that if people can’t handle me as I am, then they simply don’t deserve to. The song kind of acts as a mockery of those people, written from their perspective, and has helped reclaim this narrative I’ve created in my head. It’s fun to be embarrassing, and it’s important to be yourself.

What’s one thing you refuse to be embarrassed about? BEING YOURSELF. Whether that’s being loud, keeping to yourself, dressing weird, moving your body – there should be absolutely no shame in authenticity.

Where’s the perfect place to listen to Blush’s music? Anywhere with some leg room. Space to boogie is mandatory.

Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? Personally, it would be a dream to me if we ever had the chance to collaborate with Mannequin Pussy. I look up to them so much, their songwriting is incredible and I love everything they stand for.

What’s on the band’s horizon for 2026? We’re so lucky to have such an exciting year planned and it’s only just started. In January and February, we go on our first ever national tour, heading to Sydney/Warrane for a couple shows, then we fly to Tasmania to play the last day of Party In the Paddock, then fly to Melbourne/Naarm for a show at The Old Bar on Febuary 12th, ending the tour with our single launch for our latest release “Embarrassed 4 U” at Clancy’s Fremantle on February 21st. We have some recording booked in within the next few months too, and plan to release some more music.
