tunesday – five minutes with robert baxter
The muso’s new track is music to our ears.
There’s a secret shortcut to happiness, and it’s found in the tunes of Robert Baxter. The Taiwanese-Australian popstar is garnering quite the reputation for their awesome pop tracks and captivating visuals, and now they’re back with even more sonic goodness. Teaming up with music producer Sweatbaby for the second instalment in a series of collaborative singles, the duo is following up their party-starting track “ICY (TAKE IT OFF)” with “MUSIC 2 MY EARS”. Rest assured, the track is exactly what it says on the label. Have a squiz at our chat with Robert Baxter below.
Describe “MUSIC 2 MY EARS” in one sentence. When they want you so bad they say yes in four different languages.
How did the creative partnership between you and Sweatbaby come about? Sweatbaby messaged me saying he liked my track “SUSPICIOUS” and asked if we could do a session. Our first session together, we made “ICY (TAKE IT OFF)” – it was pretty magical. Through the whole process of making tracks and releasing them, the work has been very 50/50 – we have different areas we own and we highlight each other’s strengths! One thing about Sweatbaby is he works so hard and creates opportunities for himself – he has a lot to bring to the table.
Where is the perfect place to listen to “MUSIC 2 MY EARS”? Anywhere and everywhere, anytime you need that pump up. Pushing through heavy squats at the gym, going through a break up, in charge of music at pres or on a road trip, as you wash your hair and your arms are getting sore – it’ll give you that little bump of energy you need.
What was the hardest thing about finishing the song? I’m obsessed with visuals and exploring what blending mine and Sweatbaby’s worlds looks like. So the hardest part was choosing the cover! We had so many options, but we’ll share all the others on socials – you’ll be well fed this era.
How did you know when the track was ready? Sweatbaby said he was so excited about this track even more than “ICY”, and I said that is such a big statement and then we sort of knew it was ready and that it should be the next single. People wanted more after “ICY”, and what can I say – we aim to please.
How does the club, dancing and ballroom communities that unfold around you influence your music? I think we as performers and artists and a community really feel music and experience it in a way that is connected. I love watching the way different people move to music. When I’m making the music, I’m picturing them and what will get them up dancing. I trust my taste and believe I’ll make something that will get them excited.
What’s next on the horizon for Robert Baxter? More smash hits, more hot visuals, more fun, more fantasy. More music and more shows in the near future, I’m going to do a tonne of sessions, travel internationally, and just keep being open to inspiration and opportunities.
