tunesday – charlie collins

The Sydney artist is tapping into her wild side.

A few months ago, Sydneysider Charlie Collins dropped everything and flew to London. “As the story often goes, a broken relationship sparked a desire to be somewhere new and somewhere exciting. I realised I needed to do something for myself to help my heart heal,” she says. After spending some time exploring the city and supporting Gang of Youths on their UK tour (with a little COVID in between), Charlie is set to return to Australia. Why, you ask? Cause she’s releasing her new album, Undone, on April 29 and going on tour.

While you wait for that, treat your earholes to her latest single, “Backseat Valentine”. Charlie spontaneously wrote the track in an hour and recorded her vocals in 10 minutes. “I’ve never written a song like that ever. It's embracing the real fucking wild side of me,” she says of the track. Creating the accompanying video, however, required a little more planning. Directed by Joel Barney from Sonder (aka the brains behind a bunch of Gang of Youths clips), the vid was inspired by the films of Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai and used everything from fisheye lenses to smearing Vaseline on the lens to get that distorted look. See it for yourself below.
