tunesday - wild nothing interview
Wild Nothing's Jack Tatum is a man after our own eardrums. Here's an little chat we had with him a few months back, plus a bunch of tickets to his debut Australian tour up for grabs.
Wild Nothing's Jack Tatum is a man after our own eardrums, so we're pretty thrilled to get to see him in his five-piece glory when he tours Australia for the first time this March.
Sometimes there is too much good stuff in the magazine that it starts spilling over the edges. Our little chat with Jack, Wild Nothing's maestro, was so splendid our pages repelled its awesomeness. So here's his witty retorts in full splendour.
EITHER/OR
Whiskey or gin?
We actually drank a lot of both on our last few tours and whiskey ginger is my standby drink (like when you get to a bar and the bartender starts staring at you looking really pissed off and you freak out and order the first thing that comes to mind, that's my drink), but lately I've been enjoying gin. I just got bored of whiskey.
Night or day?
Night, definitely. I'm not a morning person. Half the time I'm not even an afternoon person. Although recently after getting back from Europe I've been jet lagged and waking up like a normal human being. I'm still a night owl though.
Albums or radio?
I feel like things must be different in Australia for this to even be a question but radio in America is depressingly grim and static. You can seek out good things I guess, college radio and all that. But I just listen to albums. It's worth a laugh to skim through the radio and hear the same Taylor Swift and Rihanna song playing simultaneously on 5 different stations, but no thanks.
Left-brained or right-brained?
I guess right-brain. That's the "creative" side right? Can't say I get how brains work. But I feel sort of lefty in a way. I'm pretty rational and objective when I need to be.
Australia or Virginia?
I've never been to Australia and I grew up in Virginia so I this is a loaded question! I guess I'd have to pick Virginia by default, but it was a nice place to grow up so I'm not unhappy about that choice. It's beautiful in it's own way and even though I don't live there anymore I'm extremely tied to the place through memory.
Electronic or acoustic?
Ideally both. Depends on what you mean though, like electronic music? Or electric instruments? I choose electric instruments.
Childhood or adulthood?
Childhood is amazing in retrospect. At least for me I tend to remember only the good things and it makes me sad and nostalgic. But being a kid kind of sucks. You can't do a lot of things. Your taste buds haven't developed fully yet so you miss out on a lot of good food because you think it's gross. You're a lot dumber. Meh, adulthood is better really.
Home or touring?
Honestly, home. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy touring but I think I get more out of being home, working on music. It's kind of easy to lose track of your direction in life when you're on tour. I know that sounds dramatic but it's kind of true. Touring makes you go crazy.
Superman or Spiderman?
I don't really feel right answering this question considering that I spent a good two years of my life pretending to be Batman. Seriously. I don't think I did anything else AT ALL when I was 4. Just pretended to be Batman, everyday.
