tunesday - the takeaways

No matter your level of enthusiasm for Australia Day, there’s never a bad time to listen to some local music.

No matter your level of enthusiasm for Australia Day, there’s never a bad time to listen to some local music. This January 26, we thought we’d scoot back in time to the ’80s, and an ABC show called Sweet and Sour. Featuring a fictional band called the Takeaways, it was a mainstay of afternoon ‘youth’ programming well into the ’90s – you can still catch the occasional ep on YouTube – and had some sweet Aussie rock sounds in amongst the hilarious mullets and randomness. This is their one and only hit, “Sweet and Sour”, and we urge you to watch it with patriotic fervour. Part of a platinum-selling album that featured real musos from The Angels, GANGgajang, Mondo Rock, Skyhooks, Divinyls, Hoodoo Gurus and Mental as Anything – plus Deborah Conway on vocals – it might just be your new dancefloor go-to. If nothing else, this clip is an education in 1980s fashion and special effects. So many neon splodges! Woo!
