tunesday - tempura nights interview

We’ve had plenty of top notch tempura nights at our local Japanese restaurant, but this is a whole different level of awesome.

We’ve had plenty of top notch tempura nights at our local Japanese restaurant, but this is a whole different level of awesome. The four-piece from Brisbane bypass our chops to deliver their catchy tunes directly to our earholes – ahead of their appearance at BIGSOUND next week we had a bit of a chit-chat with guitarist Alice Rezende.

Tell us a little about your sound. We’re all really into mathy/kraut/angular rock while also being huge suckers for indie pop. So we try to go a bit beyond the boundaries of what we’re comfortable writing, and spend a lot of time developing ideas. Our bassist Andre records and produces all the music.

Who got you into music? My Brazilian high school friends, who would serenade each other drunkenly every afternoon while we were on holidays with Brazilian MPB classics.

What are you fascinated by? Tuxedo cats.

If you could live in any era, which would it be and why? The 3000s? So I could wear a really sexy latex suit and furnish my space craft with lavish tapestries.

Have you had a life-changing musical experience? Last time I watched the Gooch Palms play in Australia I knew that I was witnessing the timeless chant of love.

What type of food would you most like to dip in batter? Crickets.

Most exciting thing that has happened to you this year? Having my mum visit from overseas. The last time she was here was about six years ago. She washed my dishes every day. Bizarre.

What is something that nobody would know about Tempura Nights? We're all bilingual/dual citizens ‘cause we’re so cosmopolitan. Except Jake, he's plain Aussie and he eats crickets.

Head here for more Tempura Nights goodness, and stop by the BIGSOUND official website to nab tickets to their show.
