tunesday - daughter interview

By Staff Writer

We threw some questions at Daughter frontwoman Elena to get to know her a little better before she hits the stage at Splendour.

If bands are anything like wine and only get better with age, we reckon we've found a mighty fine drop in London band Daughter. In music years the talented trio are only in their infancy, but they've already won us over with their soulful tunes and emotion-heavy lyrics.

Considering they've only recently released their debut album, If You Leave, we can only imagine how many internal fist pumps we'll be doing (as we sway weepily on the outside) once the group have been stored up for a few more years.

When and where do you feel most creative?
Bouncing ideas around and demo-ing with Igor. We went into isolation at the start of 2012 in the countryside in England, and recorded and wrote songs with no intention of really doing anything serious, just wanted to get out of London and create - we ended up using five songs we wrote there on the album, so it was a creative couple of weeks.

Daughter tracks have been used to soundtrack a whole bunch of TV shows. Which show would you love to see your music on?
We're really into The Walking Dead at the moment, so that would be very cool!

You've never played in Australia before – what are you expecting the visit to be like?
Very short, but very sweet! I'm not sure we even have one day off to explore... So I'll just have to soak in as much as possible! I've heard such great things about Splendour in the Grass from friends who have played there, so I'm excited to spend a day watching bands and having fun! Also very excited for our sideshows - it's nice to have the mixture of festival gigs and then something more intimate.

What can we expect from your Splendour set?
I think we are more aggressive sounding live than on record, which is always fun for us! Also we like to have a mixture of album songs and EP songs.

What sort of household did you grow up in?
My mother and father lived in the suburbs of London, so that's where my brother and I were born. My parents were both from foreign families - my dad is Irish and my mother is Italian - but a lot of their families had been living in England for age, which meant I had a lot of aunties and uncles and cousins around me. Family was extremely important to me growing up, as was music - I was introduced to so many artists and bands through my parents and my relatives.

What do you eat for breakfast?
Usually nothing much... which is very unhealthy, I know. I do love tea though, so I usually have a cup when I wake up.

What's the best song to be listening to when stuck on public transport?
"Reverse Running" - Atoms for Peace.
