the sapphires film giveaway

New Aussie film The Sapphires follows the true story of four indigenous girls in the '60s who formed a soul group. The reason why it received a ten minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival was probably because the audience couldn't stop dancing.

Here is a film that we should be very proud to call our own. The Sapphires is a new Australian film that follows the true story of four Aboriginal girls who formed a soul band in the '60s and toured throughout war-torn Vietnam. Starring Deborah Mailman and the ultra-hilarious Chris O'Dowd as their misguided manager, it is equal parts feel-good romp, musical flashback, and historical comment, subtly bringing in sensitive issues such as the Stolen Generation and the racial prejudice of war. It received a ten minute long standing ovation when it had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival earlier in the year, and we were lucky enough to see the Australian premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival last week (click here for the full program if you're in Victoria): we were dancing in our seats the whole way through.

The Sapphires opened in cinemas yesterday, and if you want to nab some free tickets, just email us here with your name and address. If you're a lucky winner, don't forget to take your dancing shoes! Spontaneous fits of doing 'the monkey' and the Nutbush may occur.
