Movie buffs, rejoice! The 31st Melbourne Queer Film Festival returns next week with a program of 145 features, documentaries and shorts that highlight the stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer communities.
It all kicks off with the doco, Flee, that tells the remarkable story of a child escaping Afghanistan. The festival will also wrap up with a doco – Fanny: The Right To Rock chronicles the tale of female rock band Fanny as they tackle the challenges of race, sexuality, gender and ageism.
Fully-vaccinated folks will be able to take part in the festivities at ACMI in Federation Square, Cinema Nova in Carlton and Village Cinemas Jam Factory in South Yarra. But don’t fret if you can’t make it in person – you’ll be able to tune into more than 40 flicks online.
The festival’s program director, Spiro Economopoulos, can’t wait to see the festivities bring queer communities back together. “During lockdown a lot of us have consumed a lot of content online, but nothing beats the feeling of the energy when you are in a cinema with friends and others from the community who understand the nuances of queer life,” he says.
