the invisible women

A beauty project about rad dos and bad-arse older ladies.

Whoever said peroxide and undercuts were reserved for the youth? Melbourne-based hair and makeup artist Margeaux Vallantyne (aka The Distinctive Dame), and Karen Lewis from the Blondies of Melbourne salon have joined forces to show off the rad locks of women over 50. Grey hair, as it turns out, is the perfect canvas for electric hues.

"In the beauty industry, there can be a very narrow view of what is acceptable and celebrated," Karen from Blondies of Melbourne explains. "If you sit outside of the demographic of late teens to early 30s, you almost become invisible. But you don’t stop existing. There is life before (and most importantly) after youth."

Take a look at some of the shots from the ongoing project below. And, if you know a bad-arse lady who deserves the spotlight, don't hesitate to alert Karen and Margeaux.
