the grocery run of shame

A Canadian supermarket printed embarrassing messages on their bags to discourage plastics use.

Bringing a canvas tote to the shops is now second nature to most of us in Australia, but that’s apparently not the case for shoppers at one independent supermarket in Canada. The East West Market in Vancouver recently resorted to printing a bunch of embarrassing plastic bags emblazoned with titles like 'The Colon Care Co Op' and 'Wart Ointment Wholesale' in order to encourage shoppers to ditch plastic (it seemed their five-cent fee wasn't enough of a deterrent). And although the shame tactic was aimed at making people think twice about their plastic usage, the limited-run bags have ironically become somewhat of a collectable. Here’s hoping people frame their colon bag as a piece of memorabilia, or at least carry them until they fall apart.
