the frankie 'do good, feel good' forum

We got together with some knowledgeable pals to talk about how we can spark change in our everyday lives.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the world’s issues, especially if you’re thinking through it all on your lonesome. You know what’s helpful, though? Getting together with some knowledgeable people and talking it out!

That’s exactly what we did at the frankie ‘do good, feel good’ forum last week. With the help of our brilliant panel – Laurinda Ndenzako, designer at local label Collective Closets; Mirte van der Lugt, brand director at Hey Tiger; Victoria McKenzie-McHarg, Bank Australia’s manager of strategy and planning – along with our host and frankie friend Brodie Lancaster, we got thinking about how businesses big and small can be more socially responsible, and how we can spark change in our everyday lives, too.

For anyone who couldn't make it, we've jotted down some helpful pointers from the discussion:

- Have a conversation with yourself. You can’t do everything, so figure out what issues you want to help make a difference in and set yourself realistic goals, whether that’s minimising your use of single-use plastics, giving money to someone in need, or volunteering in your spare time.

- Hold yourself accountable, but be gentle on if you slip up, too. You might have forgotten your reusable cup today but there's always tomorrow. Doing better by the environment is a constant process.

- Start conversations! Chances are, those around you have been dying to talk about this stuff, too. You’ll feel less alone getting it out there. Plus, collaboration is key to taking on the powers that be.

- Demand better from brands and governments. Urge your favourite store to be more sustainable. Ask your bank about what they will or won't invest in. Call your local MP’s office and tell them what you think of their party's policies.

Got any other suggestions for not feeling overwhelmed by it all? Share it with us on Instagram or facebook.

Thank you to everyone who came along! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all while stuffing ourselves silly with pizza and tipples (provided by The Moor's Head, Matso's and Garage Project, respectively). A round of applause for our hosts Thornbury Picture House and of course to Bank Australia for making it all happen.

You can see more photos from the shindig over on facebook.
