Who’d have thought that with a few swipes of your spatula, you could turn a simple cake into a mini masterpiece?

Unlike using real painterly watercolours (which require a bucketload of skill and patience), creating this swishy-swashy effect with icing is a total cinch – and actually pretty tricky to get wrong. You can smear and smudge it any way you please – the only rule is that you make a tonne of the sugary stuff so you’ve got plenty for noshing on throughout the process.
