Howdy-doo, frankie friends! It wouldn’t be Stuff Mondays without something spiffy to send your way, and this morning we’re ticking all the right boxes, if we do say so ourselves.
Howdy-doo, frankie friends! It wouldn’t be Stuff Mondays without something spiffy to send your way, and this morning we’re ticking all the right boxes, if we do say so ourselves.
Ceramics specialists Royal Doulton have teamed up with British designers HemingwayDesign to create a range of retro-tinged tableware ready to be poured, sipped from or just gazed at adoringly. There are storage jars, vases, jugs and more, all in various shades of lovely and unexpectedly affordable.
But here’s the best news: we’ve got a pair of prize packs up for grabs featuring five of the pretty pieces (and valued at 239 smackeroonies). If you like what you see and want to add to your ceramic stash, email your name and address here and wish with all your might.
To get the full low-down on the range’s snazzy makers, have a read of our interview with Wayne Hemingway and his daughter Tilly below.
Tell us a little about yourself and what you do. We have been designers for 30 years – everything from large-scale affordable housing projects to (currently) restoring a dilapidated amusement park for community. Our first priority is to help others improve the quality of their lives, not to make money. Everything we think about is driven by “would we use it personally, would we like it personally and could people we know afford it?”
Hemingway Design is a family affair! What’s it like working so closely with your loved ones? Tilly: Terrible! No, it’s actually really good – we don’t argue, we’ve all got a similar view or eye. Disagreements are constructive; there is no point scoring. Everyone project manages different projects. Wayne: The family has freedom to succeed as each person is talented in their own way. There is brainstorming on colour, design, etc, but then we get on with it.
What drew you to collaboration with Royal Doulton? Tilly: I always had a love for Mid-century dinnerware and ceramics and started throwing my own ceramics a few years ago as gifts for friends. The collection is a passion for me, which is why it’s so beautiful and personal.
How would you describe the range you’ve created? Wayne: simple, uncomplicated, functional, understandable. Tilly has a great eye for timeless pieces – you can’t tell whether it is retro or new. Modernist design is timeless – we wear pieces that come from the ’50s and ’60s and pieces from modern day. The trick is not to look like you have stepped out of the ’50s. The colours in the collection are perfect – they makes it so approachable yet desirable.
What sort of things did you have on your mood board when coming up with the designs? Tilly: The range had to work on its own and as a whole. We looked at form, shape and materials from Mid-century design and modern requirements. We also looked at each piece being a stand-alone in the home and the colours working together to create something unique.
