sand art cake

Like sands through the hourglass, these are the cakes of our lives.

Does anyone know what the point of those coloured sand bottles were in the ’90s? There probably wasn’t one… but that doesn’t mean they weren’t extremely cool (and basically compulsory if you were a kid at the time). The super-talented ladies over at A Beautiful Mess have created a cake inspired by said bottles, and instructions for you to make one of your own. Of course, they haven’t used actual sand – that would taste revolting. Rather, they’ve employed coloured sugar crystals for this purpose. Ain’t that clever? Oh, and the techniques for dyeing and applying them look really fun, too. Happy decorating.
