retirement circa 1970

Here’s how you might have kicked up your heels, had you been part of the first-ever retirement village in the States.

Looking forward to your twilight years? Well, you certainly would be, if your retirement village looked like this. These images are of Youngtown, Arizona, the first-ever retirement community in the States. When LIFE mag took these snaps in 1970, Youngtown had a population of 14,000 oldies who enjoyed tonnes of clubs and activities, dancing, golfing across three courses, and a bit of dating, too. Apparently, the residents loved the fact that they could kick up their heels in this hippie and drug-free oasis.
