melbourne’s must-see diner for ‘80s interiors

This retro bar has flung its doors back open!

If you’ve ever frequented Melbourne’s Gertrude Street, you’ve likely caught a glimpse of this glittering, neon establishment. If not, you’ll want to slide into one of Evie’s diner booths, stat.

Lighting up the iconic Fitzroy streetscape, Evie’s Disco Diner is a flamboyant ‘80s-style diner, inspired by the vibrancy of New York back when big hair and spandex were all the rage. “The idea was to combine the free spirit of the era and décor into a venue with modern Melbourne sensibilities,” says Evie’s owner Wayne Markus.

Fans of retro interiors will find many a photo-worthy moment among the converted warehouse’s bright pink and blue walls, accessorised with disco balls and vintage arcade games. Plus, if you’re on the hunt for one of the city’s finest vegan chicken and waffles, we’d heartily recommend tucking in at Evie's.

For a triumphant return to that thing formally known as ‘going out’, you may also want to stop by for some drag bingo or ‘queeraoke’. Or, make it a lunch date and grab a table in time for their much-loved bottomless brunch. Either way, you’ll want to take your camera along.
