meet our issue 122 cover artist, jasmine dowling
Jasmine dreams up new flower species for her work.
What do you do for a crust? I’m a mixed-media creative across stills and video. I split most of my days between creative storytelling for beauty clients and working on personal projects.
What’s your creative process for making an artwork like the one featured on our cover, Cross Pollination Flower Chart Season 2? For most of my career I have loved photographing flowers, while also having a very analog approach to creating – there’s a lot of collaging and mixing media. Naturally, those two things came together with the idea that I could deconstruct flowers and create my own combination of petals, then press them to create a new flower. Every few weeks I would head to my local flower market to create new combinations with what was in season before tasking myself with selecting my top 40 out of hundreds of floral combinations.
Where do you look for creative inspiration? I find a lot of inspiration in experimenting with new practices or methods of creating. Playing with a new craft or camera can take me out of my comfort zone and allows me to create more freely without expectation.
You also create beautiful content for brands – any advice on avoiding burnout while balancing commercial and personal projects? I try to be really aware of my limits when booking in work. I’m always looking at my workload and assessing the types of jobs I have coming up – whether they require a lot of creative focus, whether they’re amazing commercial opportunities, or a bit of both. From there I can assume when I might be craving some personal creative projects. I also love working on really varied projects across illustration, photography, videography and mixed media, which helps because no day is the same.
Where can we see more? At my website, my Instagram and TikTok.
