maz dixon manipulated retro postcards

Australian artist Maz Dixon thinks postcards and souvenirs set us up for disappointment.

It can be hard to admit it without sounding a little whingey, but sometimes travelling the world can deal you some pretty hefty disappointments. Like the moment you realise the measly dimensions of the supposedly glorious Mona Lisa, or the fact that the must-see Spanish Steps in Rome are really just your average flight of thigh-busting stairs.

Artist Maz Dixon blames those pesky postcards and souvenirs for setting the bar unrealistically high. Using plenty of pastels and fab retro touches, her mixed media series Attraction takes a look at how we're told to experience a destination, and the gap between our expectations and reality.
