manipulated portraits by alma hasar

The German artist takes portraits apart and puts them back together in unexpected ways.

Alma Haser isn’t your average portrait photographer. The German artist’s process might begin with shooting a subject, but from there, she plays with multiple mediums including paper manipulation, collage and even jigsaw puzzles.

In her series ‘Cosmic Surgery’, she folds her subjects’ faces into complex origami constructions, places them back onto the original photo and re-photographs the scene. In ‘Within 15 Minutes’, she merges the images of identical twins in a puzzle format to create two unique portraits. The results are both eerie and strangely beautiful, like a fever dream on paper.
