make a fake cake for valentine's day

Present your love with a spiffy everlasting dessert.

We adore an intricately decorated vintage-style cake around these parts, but like most of the best things in life, they do come with some cons. First off, they're rather exxy (and rightly so – they're practically works of art!). Secondly, unlike works of art, you can't exactly display them around your abode, due to ants and mice and the stench of expired dairy (more on that now). Thirdly, the delicious ingredients they contain, like cream, tend to stop being delicious after just a few days. So, unless you're hosting a big shindig or live with a family of 10, be prepared to throw some of those pretty, pricey slices in the bin.

Thankfully, crafty lady Brittany Watson Jepsen (aka The House That Lars Built) has come up with a recipe for a cheap, everlasting and non-stinky vintage-style cake – all you really need is some cardboard, paint and spackle (the paste used to fill cracks and holes in walls).

Brittany has shared her rad creations over here, along with all the instructions you need to make your own. Sounds like just the thing to whip up for your valentine, eh? Or perhaps you'd prefer to host a crafternoon sesh with your mates and keep the cakes all to yourselves instead.
