how the environment helped inspire clea’s new album

By Elle Burnard

We caught up with the Brissy-based artist on how she finds inspiration for tunes in the outside (and indoor) world.

Clea gives us a neat behind-the-scenes access of her daily life and her super-swish environment, which helps to spark her super-rad song-writing process. Have a read of our interview with Clea below.

Where’s your go-to place for getting the inspiration juices flowing? A place where I enjoy going to get my creative juices flowing is going to friends’ exhibitions, gigs and the ocean.

L: Most mornings we wake up to kangaroos hopping through the overgrown grass or looking at us in disbelief. R: In this space is where the majority of Idle Light was recorded, a studio turned home.

How do you beat a creative block? To be honest, I don't often experience creative block. I believe that constantly needing to create is somewhat unattainable, so I allow my body and mind to decide and follow the natural rhythms of my creative cycles.

Describe the meaning behind your album’s title, Idle Light. Idle light is the light that is always present, but it's up to the individual to find it. No matter how difficult it may seem, there is always a way out.

L: The space and colours in the country create an amazing palette for creation. R: My bed is my safe space. I am very happy about my recent op shop find — a vintage wool blanket.

How does the environment influence your music? The environment has a big influence on my music. When I'm at home on the property the space enables me to create freely without any boundaries. However, in the city, there are more restrictions which can sometimes be beneficial. Limits can also have a positive impact on my creative output.

L: I love the silhouette of the pine tree, it's one of the last outlines you can see before the day descends into darkness. R: I feel like my prime writing time is winter, there’s something about the crisp clear days and cold nights that stirs the music inside me.
