how larysa bernhardt’s moth sculptures capture memories

If you think moths can't be beautiful, think again.

Larysa Bernhardt’s moths aren’t the kind you’ll find fluttering around your ceiling light as you tuck yourself into bed at night. However – if it was up to us – they are the kind of moths that belong behind glass in a gallery – flowing manes of hair and all.

The Ukrainian-American’s unique art practice was passed down to her from her mother, who learnt the skill from her own mother. These aren’t any ordinary moths – the carefully-crafted sculptures feature tapestries across the creatures’ wings, displaying everything from embroidered flowers to portals of museum-like paintings.

For Larysa, the moths are simply an extension of the art-filled world she came of age in with her family. “It almost felt like leaving the wall naked was a sin, and a naked floor was another one,” she says on her website.
