fairy floss grapes

And now, in food news: a local winery are growing grapes for munching that taste just like fairy floss.

As well as growing berries for their delicious range of wines, Yalumba have been cultivating grapes for the purposes of eating – a particular breed of which tastes just like cotton candy, or fairy floss, as we call it here in Australia.

David Cain, a fellow based in California, invented the scrummy snack by accident when he crossbred his favourite grape species, the Conchord, and the good old Vitis Vinifera, a table species used in winemaking. The result? A grape bursting with sugary flavour, reminiscent of the finest fairground floss.

Yalumba were the first folks to start planting the new creation here on our shores, and you can find the super-sweet fruit in select grocery stores in Sydney and Melbourne now. (By the way, you’ll spot them in even more places come next February.) Pop over the Yalumba website to find out more.
