build your own street library

Three cheers for spreading the gospel of reading: hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray!

At some point you may have spotted an elusive street library standing merrily and unexpectedly on a neighbourhood footpath. Popping up in random corners of the world, the mini archives tend to be community projects installed to help youngsters (or their grown-up counterparts) form a passion for books – the idea is to donate, swap and discover different titles, and spend time improving literacy while also bonding with your neighbours.

With such a feel-good purpose, we were rather stoked to come across this build-it-yourself guide over on Design Sponge. Taking cues from designer Jason Lee, they teach you how to turn an outdoor chair, some wood, drawers and boxes (plus a few other bits and bobs) into a cute-as-a-button library ready to store your favourite novels. Three cheers for spreading the gospel of reading: hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray! Hip-hip-hooray!
