australia’s biggest photography festival returns to melbourne

By Shannon Jenkins
30 March 2022

Catch us peeping the Helmut Newton and Cindy Sherman shows.

Calling all shutterbugs and arty types in Victoria: Australia’s biggest photography biennale will return to Melbourne and regional Victoria in just a few weeks. From April 29 to May 22, the PHOTO 2022 International Festival of Photography will showcase 123 artists and photographers across 90 exhibitions. (Try not to feel too overwhelmed by the sheer volume of shows to see – you've got plenty of time to figure out which ones float your boat by perusing the program here.)

There’ll be exclusive exhibitions by a bunch of distinguished international photographers, as well as new commissions by local creatives. The festival will also feature outdoor installations, events and education programs, all of which relate to the theme, ‘Being Human’. Oh, and did we mention there's a bicycle tour?

This year, fashion photography icon Helmut Newton will be honoured with an exhibition presented by the Jewish Museum of Australia: Gandel Centre of Judaica, while American artist Cindy Sherman will be celebrated through a large-scale installation at Fed Square. All the shows are free (except for the Helmut Newton exhibition), so you can pick and choose as you please. Have a squiz at the PHOTO 2022 website for more info.

PHOTO 2022 runs from April 29 to May 22.
