abandoned japan

Shane Thom’s photographic visions of Japan are a far cry from the country we tend to be shown.

Shane Thom’s photographic visions of Japan are a far cry from the country we tend to be shown: a bustling city full of flashing lights and kooky characters, plus all the Hello Kitty you can lay your eyes on. Instead, his Abandoned Japan series captures old hospitals, schools, and even a theme park – all of which are devoid of a human presence. From eerie, rusted medical equipment to rollercoaster tracks engulfed by nature, the shots bring on an overwhelming sense of stillness, and a beautiful-yet-disconcerting feeling of a moment untouched and preserved in time.
