a rather mind-blowing bookstore

Chongqing Zhongshuge bookstore feels less like a shop and more like a theatrical work of art.

Ever wanted to know what it feels like to step inside a painting? Look no further than China's Chongqing Zhongshuge bookstore, which feels less like a shop and more like a theatrical work of art. The Escher-like stairs weave around this immense two-story building, with curved walls and mirrors adding to the surreal (yet oddly soothing) feel. The design team wanted to celebrate not just books, but also the city Chongqing by using images of local landscapes and buildings. Check out the children’s room, too – a reader’s delight, no matter what age.
