Mariko Kusumoto handcrafts translucent fibre orbs, each with a curious object or two inside – be it a car, a horse or just more orbs. The Japanese artist also enjoys working with metal. Indeed, should you take the time to peruse her website, you’ll find a chess set made from metal trinkets (including a teeny-tiny fridge and a Venus de Milo), a miniature lorry truck that doubles as a pencil sharpener and much, much more. But it’s Mariko’s fibre work that’s made us a little bit squealy. She’s even turned a bunch of her orbs into rings and the like. Perhaps there will come a day when we can purchase a piece or two to attach to our bodies? Yes, that would be nice – but for now, we’ll settle for quietly marvelling at her intricate handiwork.
