When Daniel Evans isn’t writing up a storm for frankie, one of his alter egos (believe us, he has a lot of them) spends his time as a theatre reviewer in Brisbane. He’s just spent the last few days big-upping this new production from La Boite, so we thought we’d ask him to write a guest blog for you all, about his newfound theatrical love, Attack of the Attacking Attackers:
“Tales from the Crypt meets South Park via It Came from the Black Lagoon! with a liberal sprinkle of just plain wrongness is La Boite Theatre Company’s world premiere of Attack of the Attacking Attackers! The crème de la crème of Queensland’s emerging theatre talent have joined forces to create this epic production that plays out like a love-letter to sci-fi. Featuring a storyline that’s as wonderfully ridiculous as the title suggests, all you need to know about the sheer awesomeness of this show is that one particular set piece involves armies of brownies fighting an invasion of warring aliens and demons for a holy book about interspecies sex. OMG. Kooky, off-kilter, rude and crude, this is a must-see for purveyors of fine culture! Attack of the Attacking Attackers plays at the Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove, until November 15th. Get your tickets at www.laboite.com.au.” |

Melbourne lasses, take note. The Inaugural Lady Garage Sale is about a bunch of ladies getting together to sell their no longer loved, worn or wanted items – and buying loads of stuff from each other, of course. There is already a bunch of girls confirmed selling clothes, records, shoes and cakes, but if you’re keen to host your own stall (and get rid of those sadly overlooked bits of your wardrobe),

There’s nothing like a film festival to have you sitting in the dark and munching on lots of popcorn. But the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival (HRAFF to its friends) aims to illuminate as well, raising awareness and generating debate on human rights issues. There’s Bling: A Planet Rock, which follows some of hip hop’s biggest names to Africa and an investigation of the blood diamond industry; The Unwinking Gaze, a portrait of the Dalai Lama’s work for Tibet; and Intervention, a doco based on the Howard government’s Indigenous policies in the Northern Territory. Plus some fun-looking short films, art, music and various associated shenanigans guaranteed to make you think, learn and smile. Melbourne gets its screening from November 12th to 30th, then the festival travels to Sydney, Perth, Canberra and Brisbane over the next few months. Visit here to HRAFF it up. |

I can’t imagine that Melburnians are ever sitting at home twiddling their thumbs with nothing to do of a weekday evening…. But if by some crazy chance you happen to find yourself in this position this coming Thursday night, the lovely Kat Macleod (some might know from Michi Girl fame or from our latest issue) is holding her very first exhibition of drawings and prints titled The Tiniest Spark. The show starts at 6pm and is held at Lamington Drive, 89 George Street, Fitzroy. If you can’t make it on Thursday, lucky for you – the show runs until November 29. A fresh breeze of new artistic talent has fallen into Gorker Gallery, frankie and many of our hearts. Leah Bartholomew, fine artist slash graphic designer, is nothing short of a little bundle of quirk, love, and talent. If you’re in need of rekindling that childhood feel and touch, and you’re one of those lucky arty folk who know their hometown as Fitzroy or somewhere near, then this trip back in time is just a stroll, skip or ride away. Leah’s dry leaves have fallen right into Gorker Gallery, 395 Gore Street, Fitzroy. Opening night is tonight, but the exhibition will be continuing all the way through until 16th November. |

Hearing about courses like this makes me so envious of the Sydney-folk. Master shoe-maker Andrew McDonald is running five and 10-day shoe-making courses. The five-day course is designed as an introduction to the art of shoe-making where you will be able to make one pair of shoes from start to finish. The main difference with the 10-day course is that during the second week you dig deeper into the shoe-making skill set and apply your newfound talents into the making of a second pair of shoes. The courses are held in Paddington, Sydney and there are plenty of dates to choose from starting from December 1st this year and running through to June 2009. The bad news is the course fees are pretty $$$, but the good news is that there is only one student per class, so tuition is on a one-on-one basis. Brilliant. No time for distractions when there is shoe-making to be done. Oh, and no previous experience is necessary – that’s what we like to hear. Hooray for beginners. For more detailed info on dates, fees and course requirements click here. |

This episode see's the 'found object' the focus of this group exhibition at Medium Rare Gallery, featuring artists such as Kareena Zerefos, Holly Sugden and Stephen Tierney (25 artists all up).
