I don’t know any budding photographers who couldn’t do with a five-grand cash injection or a bunch of vouchers from Canon. Lucky for them, all they have to do for a chance to win this stuff is what they do best – taking photos. The Heart of Gold International Film Festival is branching out and hosting the 2008 Heart Of Gold International Photographic Awards. They are calling for entries now and until January 15th next year. For all the competition details or to enter, head here.

Beci Orpin, mother of real kiddies and the lovely Princess Tina label – and perennial artsy heroine of frankie – is having a very special solo exhibition. Called Outside, Over There, the show balances between folkish nightmare, with roaming foxes, mysterious silhouettes and dancing mushrooms, and the cute animal characters, paper-cuts and craft of Beci's past. Fairytale narratives, animals galore and a big nod to craft: this exhibition will warm the cockles of your nostalgic heart and perhaps give you a little nightmarish chill too. Outside, Over There opens tonight in Melbourne then runs from August 23rd to September 14th at the Outre Gallery, 249-251 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. But Sydneysiders are in for a treat too – your Beci Fest 2008 opens a week later on August 29th at Outre Gallery, 13A Burton Street, Darlinghurst.

We are proud as punch to be involved with an awesome little exhibition in Canberra called Murmur, showcasing graphic and fine art from students and staff at the University of Canberra. There’s an opening do tomorrow night (Thursday 17th) with live music, lots of pretty things to look at and limited edition prints, original art and other goodies for sale. But for the eager beavers who just cannot wait, the show is actually on from today, Wednesday 16th till Tuesday 22nd July at The Front Gallery and Cafe, Wattle Street, Lyneham. It’s gold coin entry and what’s more, all profits go to the uni’s graphic design graduate exhibition so merely turning up will make you a patron of the arts. Such cuteness in the capital!

Don’t Sweat Shop

Don’t sweat it frankie fashionistas, when we say green is the new black, we don’t mean literally. We’re talking about going ‘green’ in terms of being environmentally friendly when it comes to fashion. If you happen to be one of frankie's spring chickens and are still 18 or under, you have a chance to re-evaluate, re-image and re-create the consumer experience through design. Ambiguous Horse is re-launching their Don’t Sweat Shop at the Melbourne International Design Festival. They will be running workshops where participants will have the chance to design and create their own garment from recycled materials and in doing so, will learn about sustainable manufacturing practices and their role as ‘end users’ in the clothing industry. Go green you frankie trend setters!!!

Ooh - this looks like fun. Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art is holding a free
Zine Fair this Sunday, May 25th. Punters can sell, buy or swap zines and other
knick knacks, and there will be live music and speakers during the day, including
Craig Schuftan of JJJ’s The Culture Club examining the rockstar as outsider (that’s
at 12.30pm), speakers like Charles Firth and Ozi Batla from The Herd talking about
the art of creative dissent (from 2pm), and then live music from Circle at 5pm,
launching their new album Just Keep Swimming. If you’re in Sydders, it could
be a good time to get yourself some indie publishing goodness.
