crafty little monkeys

I’m going to visit some friends in the States next month, which means a) I have zero cash to spend on fun weekend activities, and b) I was in need of some cool thank-you presents to dole out after staying on people’s couches and spare beds. So here’s what I whipped up over Saturday and Sunday! The pattern is from a book called Softies, which I’ve been keen to get into ever since my lovely friend Leah gave it to me for Christmas. I was so pleased, because for once my creation actually ended up looking like the one in the book! There’s lots of leftover material and stuffing too, so I might throw a few more together for Meet Me at Mike’s Softies for Mirabel drive. Um, and Leah should get one too.

WE LOVE HACKING PATTERNS

If you’re partial to the odd bit of seamstressing when the mood hits, and you haven’t already, have a gander at Burda Style Open Source Sewing. There are heaps of free (and very cheap) patterns to download, as well as mods members have made to existing Burda patterns, like this sweet ‘Sidonie’ skirt variation. Plus there’s forums to talk sewing stuff, some how-to’s, and piccies of other people’s creations. Quite apart from anything else, it means you won’t have to battle through hordes of sticky infants, bad fabric and unhelpful sales assistants next time you want a freakin’ pattern!

frankie magazine is a national bi-monthly based in Australia, aimed at 20-something women (and men) looking for a magazine that’s as smart, funny, sarcastic, friendly, cute, rude, arty, curious and caring as they are. subscribe here
