BECI BECI BECI

Beci Orpin, mother of real kiddies and the lovely Princess Tina label – and perennial artsy heroine of frankie – is having a very special solo exhibition. Called Outside, Over There, the show balances between folkish nightmare, with roaming foxes, mysterious silhouettes and dancing mushrooms, and the cute animal characters, paper-cuts and craft of Beci's past. Fairytale narratives, animals galore and a big nod to craft: this exhibition will warm the cockles of your nostalgic heart and perhaps give you a little nightmarish chill too. Outside, Over There opens tonight in Melbourne then runs from August 23rd to September 14th at the Outre Gallery, 249-251 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. But Sydneysiders are in for a treat too – your Beci Fest 2008 opens a week later on August 29th at Outre Gallery, 13A Burton Street, Darlinghurst.

Please Do Touch the Display

In most exhibitions, the irresistible itch to touch and feel the art on display is battled with by our awareness of nearby security personnel and video cameras. Not so for designer Todd Robinson’s Material Thinking. At this exhibition he is asking for you to follow your impulse and touch what you see. “I have often found it comical at exhibitions when I have seen people touch works, thinking no-one is watching them,” says Robinson. Robinson draws on his background in fashion design, using samples from knitting and beading processes, tactile surfaces, luminous effects and drapery to lure you in and prompt you to reach out to the work in front of you. Material Thinking will be held at the DAB LAB Research Gallery from 28 August until 18 September. The Gallery is located on Level 4 courtyard, 702 Harris Street, Ultimo, Sydney.

John Patrick McKenzie

There’s a little gem taking San Francisco and surrounds by storm right now. The exhibition runs from September 11th to October 2nd during which time you can take a stroll to 20 Burton Street, Surry Hills, or see what all the fuss is about at www.monsterchildren.com

The tiniest spark

I can’t imagine that Melburnians are ever sitting at home twiddling their thumbs with nothing to do of a weekday evening…. But if by some crazy chance you happen to find yourself in this position this coming Thursday night, the lovely Kat Macleod (some might know from Michi Girl fame or from our latest issue) is holding her very first exhibition of drawings and prints titled The Tiniest Spark. The show starts at 6pm and is held at Lamington Drive, 89 George Street, Fitzroy. If you can’t make it on Thursday, lucky for you – the show runs until November 29. For info on gallery opening hours click here.

Kareena couldn’t be keener

Oops. I missed posting about this yesterday. I am a bad, bad person. But here is some good, good art. You might remember Kareena Zerefos from her guest appearances in frankie – even if you don’t, who could say no to these cute visions of kids with rats on their heads? Kareena opened her solo exhibition at Famous When Dead Gallery (207 Victoria Street, West Melbourne) last night, and it’s running till November 23rd so there’s plenty of time to catch her pretty works. She also says she’ll be popping her head in between two and three o’clock on Sunday in case you want to say hello.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS, YEAR IS OVER

The Year is Over group exhibition opened last night at Sydney’s Black & Blue Gallery and, from what we hear, it is a real doozy. Featuring the not inconsiderable talents of our senior photographer – the lovely Julia Schauenburg – it’s a group show also including works by Lachlan Anthony, Chris Barton, Tristan Cecidia, Erin Forsyth, Leah Fraser, Nathan Gray, Emily Hunt, Thomas Jeppe, Jordana Maisie, Amanda Maxwell, Conor O’Brien, Greg Perano, Josh Raymond,  David Withers and Raquel Welch. Phew! That’s a lot of cool stuff! Year is Over is on till December 7th at Black & Blue Gallery, 302/267-271 Cleveland Street, Redfern. Get along if you can.
