Oops. I missed posting about this yesterday. I am a bad, bad person. But here is some good, good art. You might remember Kareena Zerefos from her guest appearances in frankie – even if you don’t, who could say no to these cute visions of kids with rats on their heads? Kareena opened her solo exhibition at Famous When Dead Gallery (207 Victoria Street, West Melbourne) last night, and it’s running till November 23rd so there’s plenty of time to catch her pretty works. She also says she’ll be popping her head in between two and three o’clock on Sunday in case you want to say hello.

Melbourne-based painter, Emily Ferretti, has been working towards her big solo show for the past year – and time is nearly up. Wonder Catch will be held at the Sophie Gannon Gallery from October 29th through till November 22nd. Emily paints objects that range from waste paper baskets to soccer nets. “Objects we use but overlook,” she says. The Sophie Gannon Gallery is found at 2 Albert Street, Richmond, Melbourne and is open Tuesday – Saturday 11am – 5pm. See more here. (studio portraits: Jeremy Drape)

Abbey McCulloch

Endearing eyes luring you in, pout full and seductive, yet a somewhat innocent quality that seems to lie within. These are the girls of Abbey McCulloch that have captured the hearts of many, and especially us here at frankie. So we're blushing just a little bit in anticipation of Abbey's latest collection. It is at New Generation Art at Art Sydney 08 that these beauties will be exposed, stripped bare of all superficiality and trivial show. Waltz along to the Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park between Friday 24th October and Sunday 26th October if your heart desires (or dares).

Yesterday our lovely friend and frankie artist Catherine Campbell sent through this wee poster promoting her upcoming exhibition with fellow ladies Andrea Innocent, Eveline Tarunadjaja and Mel Stringer which is opening this weekend in Melbourne. I was just about to rewrite all the info up and then had a thought ... what a shame to not share this prettiness with everyone... so here it is ...

New York photographer Porter Hovey likes a bit of Polaroid action and we’re sure glad she does – her insta pics of her home town look warm and nostalgic and magical. Have a look at more of them here. Sigh. New York. So pretty. So far away.

BUMPER ART BLOG

It’s officially crazy art weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday, with a big ole bumper crop of art happenings around the place. First up there’s SIMON DE GROOT’s show SOME THINGS BREAK, on at The National Grid Design Distillery, 24 Chard Road, Brookvale Sydney from August 30th to September 20th. We featured Simon a little while ago in the mag and have always had a soft spot for his cutesy wrongness. The lad himself will be there having a few bevvies on Saturday afternoon just to kick things off, so pop past and say ‘hi’.

Then a little further up the coast there’s the PAPER BEATS ROCK art exhibition, Friday the 29th at the Ruby Tramp, Orchid Avenue Surfers Paradise. The work of 40 local, coasty artists will be on display and each piece is on sale throughout the night, so if you’re feeling a bit ‘money bags’, now might be the time to snaffle some local art cred for your bedroom wall. Tickets are 10 bucks on the door and half the proceeds go to the Salvation Army.

Skipping down to Sydney Town again, there’s GIRLS FOR BOYS, an exhibition of jewellery that shines the light on adornment for men. Ten female jewellery design grads have created a heap of quirky, handmade contemporary jewellery objects made for, and inspired by, boys – so if you’re in the market for a sparkly doodad for your boy’s next birthday, this could be the place. Opening night is tonight Thursday 28th at gaffa gallery in Surry Hills, and the exhibition runs till Tuesday September 9th.

Oooh – and then there’s this: 20x20x20, on at the Palmer Projects Gallery, 2/238 Palmer Street Darlinghurst, tonight Thursday 28th from 6 till 9. Together with Of the Castle and Stupid Krap, the Palmer Projects kids want to spread the love of art ownership to the lighter-walleted amongst us, so 20x20x20 features 20 artists providing 20 editions of their works for 20 bucks each. Yep, you can own a little piece of Ben Frost, Anthony Lister, Trent Whitehead and others for not much more than a nice lunch out. Nice, one fellers.

Then a final warning, this time about monsters. Apparently the streets of Sydney are about to be taken over by the big scary lumps as Ruban Rat gallery, 76 Parramatta Road Stanmore, hosts Monster Invasion from Friday 29th to September 19th. Artsy folk like ghostpatrol, beastman, junior, plump oyster and Ryan Boserio will be showing off their attempts to scare the bejeezus out of you, or possibly just mildly freak you out, like one of the nice cuddly monsters on Sesame Street. Eek!

Ooooh – this is on our wish list. The STD35 Pinhole Camera Kit promises lots of crafty fun with cardboard and plastic spools then hours of photography on a professional-grade pinhole camera using 35mm film. You literally get to make your own camera. How cool is that?
