bumming with jane

Patrick and Jane are hitting 30, madly in love, madly in lust and occasionally just plain mad. All of their furniture except the couch has been sold to the pawnbroker, they live on a diet of cheap wine, baked beans and whatever they can find in the dumpsters behind their local supermarket, and they take it in turns to hold down a part time job. Inspired by the poetry of Charles Bukowski and the modern Australian city, Bumming With Jane is a funny, loving and beguiling debut play from Tahli Corin. It's about love, poverty and the fleeting joy of choosing to live a free and ragged-arse life. The play runs from August 13 - September 7 at the Downstairs Theatre on Belvoir Street, Surry Hills. For bookings call (02) 9699 3444.

Aliens Vs Demons Vs Us

When Daniel Evans isn’t writing up a storm for frankie, one of his alter egos (believe us, he has a lot of them) spends his time as a theatre reviewer in Brisbane. He’s just spent the last few days big-upping this new production from La Boite, so we thought we’d ask him to write a guest blog for you all, about his newfound theatrical love, Attack of the Attacking Attackers:

“Tales from the Crypt meets South Park via It Came from the Black Lagoon! with a liberal sprinkle of just plain wrongness is La Boite Theatre Company’s world premiere of Attack of the Attacking Attackers! The crème de la crème of Queensland’s emerging theatre talent have joined forces to create this epic production that plays out like a love-letter to sci-fi. Featuring a storyline that’s as wonderfully ridiculous as the title suggests, all you need to know about the sheer awesomeness of this show is that one particular set piece involves armies of brownies fighting an invasion of warring aliens and demons for a holy book about interspecies sex. OMG. Kooky, off-kilter, rude and crude, this is a must-see for purveyors of fine culture! Attack of the Attacking Attackers plays at the Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove, until November 15th. Get your tickets at www.laboite.com.au.”

the hayloft project

If you’re looking for something a little different, check out Theatre company The Hayloft Project . This group of talented beings is kicking off 2009 with two contemporary retellings of late 19th century masterpieces at The Meat Market, North Melbourne from April 24th. Three of Melbourne's best young directors were given Chekhov’s original Three Sisters text, the same cast and the same designers and asked to use some bold and original vision. Their second production, Spring Awakening, is an award winning interpretation of Frank Wedekind’s 1890 play of the same name. Head in for a show on cheap Tuesday and you’ll get 10 bucks off the $30 cover charge.

That face

Polly Stenham wrote the play That Face when she was just 19. In 2007 it premiered at London’s West End to critical acclaim and sell out performances. Now, the story of fractured, middle class family is showing at The Belvoir Street Theatre from February 6 – March 14. The cast is pretty special too with Emily Barclay, Marcus Graham and Susie Porter bound to give exciting performances. To secure tickets head over to Belvoir Street Theatre. baal by brecht

For all of you theatre buffs out there, it's time to grab a box of Malteasers and head to Sydney Theatre Company's production of Baal. The story of a hedonistic yet endearing artist, it has just finished a lauded run in Melbourne. The play is by the stupendous Brecht - one of our favourite mind boggling playwrights - who has a habit of turning the simplest themes into theatrical sudokus. It is running from Wednesday May 7th through to June 11th, and we have two double passes to give away for the show on Monday May 9th. edward gant's amazing feats of loneliness

Time for more Sydney Theatre Company goodness! Next up is Edward Gant's Amazing Feats of Lonlieness. Set in 1880s Britannica, Mr. Gant is the ringleader to a troupe of the weird and wonderful. The play follows him and his hoard of oddities in a series of other-worldly theatrical vignettes. And get this - the costumes are all done by Romance Was Born, 19th century crazy sideshow style. It's going to be a spectacle! It opens on June 16th and will run to July 23rd. To celebrate, we're giving away two double passes to the show on Monday June 20th. Most of you will know Daniel Evans as one of frankie’s most awesomest wordsmiths, but that’s not his day job. Dan is in fact a professional theatre luvvie – writing, producing and directing plays of radness for his Brisbane theatre collective The Good Room. So we thought we’d let you know that tickets for Nina Raine’s Rabbit, directed by one Daniel Evans, are on sale now. It’s a story about being on the brink of your 30s, the unreliability of facebook friends, the shitness of ex-boyfriends, and how booze and a nostalgic soundtrack always mix. Dan says: “Rabbit is about the people we love and the people we love to hurt – who, ironically, are the people we care for most. It’s about Generation Y waking up on the doormat of their 30s, asking ‘what now?’ and ‘where to from here?’” We promise it will be good. And if it isn’t, you have our permission to challenge Dan to a dance-off to show your displeasure. Rabbit runs July 12 to 28 at Metro Arts. Tickets via The Good Room.
