Rotten Teeth and Halloween Candy

frankie photographer and general favourite lady Natasha Cantwell – she shot
the cover and the denim shoot for our current issue – is gearing up for a solo
show at Auckland’s Seed Gallery as part of the city’s Festival of Photography.
It’s called Rotten Teeth and Halloween Candy and riffs on scary and violent
motifs becoming “cleaned up and de-fanged” into suburban cuteness. Pop
it in your diary if you’re NZ-inclined: it’s opening tomorrow (Monday June 3rd)
at 6pm and the show runs from 4 – 15 June. Swing by Seed Gallery,
23A Crowhurst Street, Newmarket, Auckland to have a look-see.

UNSENSORED08

The Melbourne Silver Mine’s annual group exhibition of analogue photography opens

From 35mm to large format, pinholes to Hasselblads, plastic toy cameras to antique collectibles, UNSENSORED08 covers many styles and blurs the line between old and new techniques, demonstrating that film photography remains beautiful, simple, accessible and relevant in an era where digital has become the norm. The exhibition runs from 8th August – 20th August at the Collingwood Gallery, 292 Smith Street, Collingwood, Melbourne. The gallery is open 7 days a week Mon – Fri 11am-9pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5pm. SNAP SNAPPY SNAP

Ooooh – this is on our wish list. The STD35 Pinhole Camera Kit promises lots of crafty fun with cardboard and plastic spools then hours of photography on a professional-grade pinhole camera using 35mm film. You literally get to make your own camera. How cool is that?

the tour

With 25 issues under our belt, what better time is there to celebrate the best bits of frankie so far? In fact, our recent frankie fashion photography showcase in Sydney was so much fun that we’ve decided to take it on tour. Melbourne people have got a few days to recover after Spring Fashion Week, with the showcase of our favourite fashions, shoots and photographers coming to Curtin House on Thursday (11th September). There will be nibbles and drinks and the prettiest pages in print! We’d love to host you all, but the exhibition space is already very cosy. If you want to come along, subscribe to our newsletter and drop us a confirmation line This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. new york, new york

If you haven't already, take a good look at Tim Barber's photographs. We guarantee they will not disappoint. His series New York Creatives might have been in danger of being a bit of a yawn, but the simplicity and realness of the shots makes them pretty perfect. Little Miss Chloe is a dream on most occasions, but it sure is lovely to see her in her own little nest and not on the red carpet. And this tee is just perfectly ripped, isn't it? Put aside a good chunk of time to get through his very impressive portfolio: it's worth it.

breathless

Utter black and white perfection by Heidi Slimane. I can't speak. All I can do is show you these.

don't fence me in

These photos by David Ryle are nice. Real nice. We especially like his landscapes, which kinda make us want to pack a bag and go trekking through the uncharted wild. But if that's not really your thing, he doesn't discriminate. There are also some visuals of nostalgic burbs, empty highways and crowded beaches. Ryle makes them all seem like objects of desire.

jackson eaton's album

Jackson Eaton has recently released a special edition photographic publication called Album. This collection of work is the tale of his relationship with former partner and fellow photographer Hasisi Park. The publication includes 24 digital prints that he has presented in hand-picked vintage photo albums. And the best bit? Jackson had two bands record tracks inspired by these images, inverting the usual tradition of an artist providing artwork for an album. And there is more! Each limited edition comes with a handwritten note and poster print of 'the last photo'. What a treat. Available here.
