hooray for nollywood
Nollywood (the name for the Nigerian film industry) is the third largest film industry in the world, releasing between 500 and 1000 movies every year. Low budget, violent and excessive, most Nollywood productions take just 10 days to make, yet they are hugely popular in the African market, as they offer local audiences characters they can identify with and stories that relate to their everyday lives. For his latest exhibition, South African photographer Pieter Hugo, asked Nollywood actors to recreate the stereotypical scenarios and characters from the films they star in. The results are super interesting. Check out Nollywood from June 12th to July 11th at the Australia Centre for Photography, Paddington, Sydney.
Ex Triple J presenter Megan Spencer has returned to Vicco with a stash of documentary photos, taken during her travels over the last five years. The pics were shot on her “little ripper”, a Lomo LCA Camera and show fraying canefields, forgotten wastelands, paddocks burnt blonde by the sun, stark city streets and forests haunted by the fires of “Black Saturday”. Twenty-one photos are on the walls of Wolf At The Door until the end of March, one hour’s drive from Melbourne. Opening hours are 10.30am till 5.30pm, Wednesday to Sunday. All the work is for sale. Prices // Large - $60 / Small - $40.
We're all for experimental photography and this exhibition is no exception. The Over Exposed is a collection photos by Hobogestapo and opens on August 19 at the Loft in Sydney. Head over here for more details.
