DOES A BEAR EXHIBIT ITSELF IN THE WOODS?

Illustrator and animator (and one-time frankie poster artist) Sean Morris is just about to launch his first-ever solo exhibition, called Bear Bones, this Friday August 8th at the Cracked Gallery at Behind the Monkey, Highgate, Perth. “I’ll be tackling subjects including ‘80s hair metal, woodland creatures and weird topographical forms,” Sean says. “The title of the show comes from the stripped-back approach I’ve taken with the work, which mainly consists of pen drawings on paper and board – and also from the fact that I like bears (and puns) a lot.” Entry is free, Perth people, and it runs till the 24th. So get along and support men with bear habits.

On the up and up

This Sunday 14th September is the time to immerse yourself in Perth’s finest design, fashion, food, craft and all things that have a touch of art. Perth Upmarket is an opportunity to see real hand-crafted beauty and meet the brilliant creatives behind all those cute little doodads we love and adore. The Perth Town Hall (corner of Barrack and Hat Streets) is where all the action will be from 12-5pm. Ooh, and if you’re pushed for time, can’t make it, or simply just love it and need more, then there will be another market – same time and place – on December 14th. This one might be good for some Chrissy shopping.

Garage sale

When you hear the words ‘Garage Sale’, you can’t help but think of getting up at 6am, driving from house to house, and rummaging through dusty old bits and pieces, all to find one little gem (if you’re lucky). Well it’s time to get that idea out of your head. This is what we like to call a designer-chic-slash-bargain-extravaganza Garage Sale. Lala Orange will be selling labels such as Another Boy, Bim Kenesis, Leonard St, Ebony Eve, Zuitton, Miyoko, Kornerd, Dime-A-Dozen and lots more. Perth’s William Street Collective will be transformed, garage-style, from today through till Sunday 21st. Head to 214 William Street, Northbridge for le bargains.

‘a loud call’ – holly’s in Perth

, Northbridge. Tickets available online for $18.

RETRO MARKET

Gird your retro-lovin’ loins, Perth kids. The ladies of Sugar Blue Burlesque are holding a vintage fleamarket this Sunday 18th at the Burlesque Lounge, upstairs 267 William Street, Northbridge, and it sounds like a corker. Wares on sale include recycled clothing from the 1920s to 1980s, antiques, retro and novelty costumes, pin-up lingerie, burlesque merchandise, sewing and crafting supplies and retro cupcakes. Plus our current ‘I Love My Shop’ retailer, Delilah Carter from Winifred & Bance, will be there with some lovely stuff to sell. Sounds like a grand day out.

PERTH MARKETY GOODNESS

We have been hearing lovely things about the design goodness and generalised cute factor of the Oxford Street Markets in Leederville (100 Oxford Street, Saturdays 9-5pm). Cool Perth kids like Made on the Left and Little Design Horse are participating through January, so you’ve got two Saturdays left to go scoop up their wares.

what’s mine is yours

Perth people grab your diaries and mark April 26th as your next shopping trip! Winifred and Bance are holding another clothing swap party. Doors open at 3pm and swapping starting at 4pm. Tickets are available in store ($15) online ($16) or on the door if there are tickets left ($18). Tickets include entry, cupcakes, bubbles and W&B bag to take your new wardrobe home with you. Unsure of swap party rules? In a nutshell you bring your new/fashionable/vintage clothes you want to get rid of (leave your trackies and sneakers at home), wash them and pop them on hangers so they’re nice and neat and hand them in before the exchange starts. You’ll then receive currency in the form of buttons. For the full rundown click here.
